Our primary home hides amidst a rural landscape surrounded by villages, hills and farmlands, and is fringed by a forest and wildlife sanctuary. Spread over 5.31 acres in a village called Kantamalia, our homesite is a gift and a calling guided by the spirits of the place that dictates its own evolution. Always awed by natural beauty, seeking solace in simplicity, and finding our awakenings in challenges, we were drawn to the rustic surroundings by forces of nature.

An abandoned cashew plantation taken over by illegal laterite stone mining had caused the area to be exploited with nothing left but large laterite pits, aging and half uprooted cashew trees, and surface vegetation that was regularly used by locals for grazing their cows and goats, or for firewood. Where mining had not been done, old cashew trees bore fruit during April-May and the nut collection process was leased out by the previous owner. The cashew apple fruits were consumed by local kids and mostly by animals from the village and the nearby forest.

Always a dreamer of homestead living and having discovered the theories of natural and permaculture farming, our original plan was to create an ecovillage environment that would be self-sustainable. But noticing an active root system of forest flora beneath the soil made us leave the land undisturbed for some time. After five years of protection and regeneration efforts, we now proudly enjoy the revived forest trees, plants, and creepers that have sprung back and welcomed several species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects.

The onslaught of commercial interests around us poses regular distractions from our efforts, but the rich biodiversity we observe every day, in such a small area, rejuvenates us to persist and persevere. We dream that our endurance shall bear fruit some day and we can motivate the surrounding communities to move towards social and ecological restoration of the beautiful landscape.
